Piazza San Quirino

The current Piazza San Quirino (St.Quirinus Square), the city religious centre since the 16th century, acquired its present layout in the second half of the 19th century, when the Municipality of Correggio decided to erect a large monument to the artist Antonio Allegri, known as “Il Correggio”, entrusting the project to the Ticinese sculptor Vincenzo Vela. This statue, made of Carrara marble, was unveiled in 1880. For this purpose, many private gardens were levelled, a few buildings were torn down,  whilst the façades of most  houses giving onto the square were remodelled. The entire area was previously marked by the presence of the northern city  moat, backfilled at the beginning of the 16thcentury (after which it was known as “Ortazzo”). The eastern side is bounded by the massive Renaissance-style Saint Quirino and Michele basilica, begun in 1516, and the adjacent Torre Civica (Civic Tower), whereas the old streets named Via Sirena, Via Filatoio, and Via Montepegni twist and turn to the southwest.
