L’attuale edificio denominato “Casa del Correggio” fu costruito alla metà del Settecento nel luogo dove sorgeva la supposta casa natale di Antonio Allegri detto il Correggio, che le fonti dell’epoca indicano come esistente già prima della metà del XV secolo e della quale non rimane alcuna traccia. Dopo ripetuti passaggi di proprietà ed alterne vicende, venne donato dai cittadini correggesi alla Municipalità nel 1854. Interessanti sono il medaglione in stucco con l’effige di Antonio Allegri (sulla facciata), opera di Eusebio Casalgrandi ed il cippo con lapide dettata dal letterato e patriota Prospero Viani collocato nel 1880 nel giardino. Oggi l’edificio, interamente ristrutturato, ospita un centro di documentazione, il Correggio Art Home, che il Comune di Correggio ha dedicato al suo illustre concittadino Antonio Allegri.

The building currently called “Casa del Correggio” was built in the mid-18^th century on the site where the supposed birthplace of Antonio Allegri, known as “Il Correggio”, once stood, a building which historical sources mention as early as the first half of the 15^th century and of which not even a single trace remains. After changing hands repeatedly, with many vicissitudes, it was finally donated by the citizens of Correggio to the Municipality in 1854. Interesting features are the stucco medallion (on the facade) by Eusebio Casalgrandi, portraying Antonio Allegri, and a boundary marker set in the garden in 1880, bearing an inscription by the patriot and man of letters Prospero Viani. The building has now been completely renovated and houses a research centre, the “Correggio Art Home”, which the Municipality of Correggio has dedicated to its famous son Antonio Allegri.
