Chiesa di San Giuseppe Calasanzio

XVI secolo

The construction work on the church, like the former monastery complex of adjacent Convitto Nazionale, began in 1567 and it was originally dedicated to Saint Dominic. It changed its name to the current one, San Giuseppe Calasanzio (St. Joseph Calasanctius) in 1783, when the Scolopi Fathers replaced the Dominicans in the former monastery next door. Girolamo Bernieri, a Dominican cardinal from Correggio, was one of the donors who funded the construction and decoration of the church. Over the centuries, this single-nave church has undergone many renovations and restorations, some necessitated by earthquakes (in 1832, 1987, and notably in 1996). Mass has not been held here since 1972 and it is currently closed to worship due to restoration. The facade has a double row of Doric pilasters, topped by a triangular pediment. It is decorated with niches holding the statues of St. Peter the Martyr (lower left), St. Vincent Ferrer (lower right), St. Dominic (upper left), St. Louis Bertrand (upper right) and St. Joseph Calasanctius (at the centre of the upper tympanum, a 19th-century sculpture by Bruto Terrachini).
