Via Borgovecchio

Settled in the 12th and 13th century, the Borgovecchio, or “old village” (after which the current street is still named) was Correggio’s first urban expansion outside the city walls. In the late 14th century, it was included in the new fortifications built by the Da Correggio family. The quarter was built up against the city walls, centred around the church and adjoining hospital of Santa Maria della Misericordia, and consisted of three long blocks divided by the streets currently called Via del Correggio and Via S. Maria.
Towards the middle of the 16th century, the old Porta Santa Maria (St. Mary’s Gate)  was closed due to changing military needs. The low porticoes joined together a long row of houses and workshops, inhabited by the merchants and craftsmen who made Borgovecchio, in the words of Riccardo Finzi
(a 20th -century Correggio historian), the “heart and guts of the city”. Among these buildings, the church of Santa Maria della Misericordia (St. Mary of Mercy) and the birthplace (reconstructed) of the artist Antonio Allegri known as “Il Correggio”, are worth mentioning.
